Canadian teams led by CDRN member institutions were selected by the US Department of Energy to be two of the twenty teams to design and build a solar home for the 2009 Solar Decathlon, a competition which aims to promote development and adoption of solar-powered housing. University of Waterloo will head up Team North, teaming up with Ryerson and Simon Fraser University's School of Arts and Technology, while the Alberta Solar Decathlon Project will be led by University of Calgary together with AIT Polytechnic and Mount Royal College.

In the report, “Design as an Instrument of Public Policy in Singapore and South Korea,” the CDRN warns that other nations are putting significant resources into design promotion and research,

Douglas MacLeod, executive director of the CDRN, and one of the authors of the report, says: “As the key to productivity, innovation and sustainability, design constitutes a critical competitive advantage in the 21st century. Numerous other countries provide a striking contrast to Canada in the extent of their commitment to design quality and their support for design as an instrument of public policy.”

A workshop at the School of Architecture, University of Waterloo in Cambridge, Ontario on Friday, July 13 was held focusing on Sustainable Design Research in Canada. The intent of the meeting was to review current Canadian research and to develop a program of dissemination and promotion of this material.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in collaboration with members of the Upstate New York and New York City chapters of the AIGA presents "The 1st Biennial Design Web Conference, " a pioneering conference with presentations streamed live October 22, 2008. The theme for 2008 is "Global Interaction in Design Education (GLIDE)."On the day of streaming, registrants will have access to content in the following types of innovative formats: live and/or recorded podcasts and webcasts, downloadable pdf files and Powerpoint presentations with voiceovers, telephone conferences, blogs and wikis. Key presentations streamed live will include synchronous Q&A sessions.
The fifth CDEN/RCCI International Design Engineering Conference will encourage a vigorous discussion on the teaching and practice of design engineering to cross the innovation gap - the gap between research and the design and creation of products, processes and procedures that help the people of Canada and the world. Submissions can include, but are not limited to, the philosophy of design; tools and techniques for effective and successful design; methods and tools for designing to meet needs; methods for and research into the assessment of design; teaching and promoting design; humanitarian design; design successes and failures; tear-downs of designs and design-processes; the infrastructure required for design; lessons and methods used in non-engineering design fields; design for commercialization; etc. The goal of the conference is to explore design practice and teaching that leads to better lives for Canadians.

This will be the first gathering of architects, engineers, builders, students, and manufacturers exploring recent developments in flexible fabric formworks for concrete structures in architecture and engineering. These two days of lectures and presentations by inventors, practitioners and researchers will focus on the new architectural forms made possible by this emerging technology. The conference will include workshop demonstrations of full-scale and model construction techniques.
The Research Institute for the Built and Human Environment (BuHu) at the University of Salford, UK, is organising its annual two-day International Conference for postgraduates researching in the field of the built environment. The 2008 event, hosted in the beautiful, historical city of Prague by The Czech Technical University of Prague (CVUT), is the 8th conference of this highly successful series.
